Champion Hurdle

The Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival is a Grade 1 race, open to horse aged four years and older. The race is the most prestigious hurdle race of not only the Cheltenham Festival, but the entire National Hunt season.

Run over a trip of 2m and 1/2 furlong the Champion Hurdle is the first of 4 Championship races at the Festival, and the third race of the opening day is renowned for producing tight and exciting finishes between the world’s top hurdlers.

Five horses have won the race three times, with Aiden O’Brien’s Istabraq being the most recent; with wins in 1998, 1999 and 2000. He holds the Champion Hurdle record of 3m 48.1s – making him undoubtedly the greatest racehorse in the event’s history.
