Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the biggest race of the Festival and the showpiece takes place on the final day.

A Grade 1 Chase for horses aged five years and older, the Gold Cup is run over three miles, two and a half furlongs and the runners must also contend with 22 fences if they are to complete jump racings’ most prestigious race.

The Gold Cup has a tremendous history and was first run in 1924. The race was ran on the Old Course until 1959, at which time it switched to the New Course. Piper Champagne became the first sponsor of the race in 1975, before the Tote, and more recently Betfred, took over the sponsorship of the event.

The most successful Gold Cup winner of all time is Golden Miller; a horse which has won this race on five separate occasions. In 2009, the Paul Nicholls trained Kauto Star became the first horse to regain the Gold Cup crown. Kauto was a fantastic jumper and one of the classiest horses to grace a racecourse in the modern era.
