Arsenal v Liverpool Preview

Saturday 20th Aug 2011, 12:45pm KO, Emirates Stadium (SS2)

Arsenal won 1-0 at the Emirates on Tuesday night in their UEFA Champions League Qualifier against Udinese, following up on a 0-0 bore draw at St James’ on the opening day of the season. They looked far from impressive on both occasions and Arsene Wenger will be looking for a much improved performance against a resurgent Liverpool side which now boasts an array of attacking talent.

Arsenal come into this game as favourites (8/5 – Bet365) whilst Liverpool have been cut from 9/4 to 2/1 (Paddy Power).

Arsenal v Liverpool – Team News

After losing Fabregas (and possibly Nasri) the Gunners also have a number of other doubts coming into this game including Djourou (thigh), Gibbs (thigh), Wilshire (ankle), Song (suspended) and Gervinho (suspended).

New signing Carl Jenkinson may be forced to make his first Premier League start, playing out of position at left back, whilst Arshavin may keep his position in the team by default, given Gervinho’s suspension.

Arsenal struggled to test the opposition goalkeeper enough at St James’ on the opening day of the Premier League season, but will welcome Walcott back after he impressed against Udinese in midweek.

On the other hand, Kenny Dalglish’s problem is picking his strongest team from a squad growing in size.

Liverpool have spent big in the summer, especially in the middle of the park with Henderson, Adam and Downing the most expensive purchases. All three started last weekend and it will be interesting to see whether the manager sticks by them after a disappointing 2nd half performance in which they threw away a one goal lead.

The combination of Suarez and Carroll caused the Sunderland defence no end of problems , particularly early on, and a bare Arsenal back-line may struggle to cope with the pace and power that the visitors have on display.

Arsenal v Liverpool – Betting Tips

Given the recent history of these two sides (four 1-1 draws in the last six meetings ate the Emirates) and the number of injuries Arsneal have, it might be well worth a small bet on a repeat scoreline (11/2 – Boylesports) or the Under 2.5 goals (3/4 – bet365) as both sides would be happy with a point each.

Both teams tended to start slowly in the 2011/12 season and there are worse betting options than the ‘draw at half-time’ (11/10 – bet365), which will be our main tip for the game.
