Ballon d’Or Betting | Messi 8/13 to claim 4th Ballon d’Or title

FIFA have announced their 23-man shortlist for the 2012 Ballon d’Or, with a few surprising nominations.

As expected, the Spanish national team and La Liga players dominate the list, whilst five Premier League players are also present; six if you include Didier Drogba who was of course an influential figure in Chelsea’s Champions League winning side.

Just Drogba and Brazilian Neymar are the only players currently plying their trade outside of Europe to make the shortlist.

Meanwhile three Goalkeepers (Casillas, Buffon & Neuer) are in with a shout, yet only two defenders have managed to force their names into the reckoning; Spanish pairing Sergio Ramos & Gerard Pique.

Three Man City players made the list, yet there was still no place for Joe Hart or Vincent Kompany, with FIFA clearly ranking Mario Balotelli’s contribution above the aforementioned. Even more alarming is that only one English player made the list – no surprise to find out that name was Wayne Rooney.

According to Paddy Power, the first bookmaker to offer betting on the winner, it looks like a straight shootout between Lionel Messi (8/13) and Cristiano Ronaldo (5/2), but perhaps Andres Iniesta could spring a surprise at 9/4?
