Chelsea v West Brom Preview

Saturday 20th Aug 2011, 5:30pm KO, Stamford Bridge (ESPN)

Stoke held Chelsea to a hard fought 0-0 draw at the Britannia Stadium last weekend, the first time Chelsea had dropped points in their opening fixture since 2001. West Brom haven’t won their opening away game in five attempts to date and managed only four away wins last season.

The Baggies’ last visit to Stamford Bridge was under then-manger Roberto Di Matteo and that trip ended in a 6-0 thumping. The Italian will be hoping for a similar result as he will form part of Villas-Boas’ backroom staff at Chelsea this time around.

Chelsea are 3/10 (William Hill) to take the three points again, with West Brom top price 11/1 (Paddy Power) to cause an upset

Chelsea v West Brom – Team News

Fernando Torres looked back to something like his old self, creating a number of chances and was very unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet at the Britannia Stadium. He will surely keep his place in the team and is 15/4 (Bet365) to score first.

Chelsea will be without Michael Essien, who is a long term-injuury doubt, whilst Villas-Boas could welcome David Luiz back into the fray. But Chelsea’s biggest inury problem is the news that Petr Cech will miss three to four weeks of the season after picking up an injury in training.

Shane Long got his West Brom career off to a flyer, netting his side’s only goal in the 2-1 defeat to Man Utd on the opening weekend.

Fellow Baggies’ striker Peter Odemwingie should be fit to return but the Nigerian may have to settle for a place on the bench given that he will be struggling for 100% match fitness.

Probable Line-ups

Chelsea (4-3-3) West Brom (4-4-2)
Turnbull;
Bosingwa, Alex, Terry, Cole;
Lampard, Mikel, Ramires;
Anelka, Torres, Malouda.
Foster;
Olsson, Tamas, Reid, Shorey;
Morrison, Mulumbu, Sharner, Brunt;
Long, Tchoyi.

Chelsea v West Brom – Betting Tips

Although this season will be one used by Andre Villas-Boas for rebuilding the squad, Chelsea will undoubtadly remain very strong at home. The last few meetings between these clubs have been dominated the Blues and whilst West Brom may be made of sterner stuff under Roy Hodgson, we still expect them to leave with nothing.

A bet on Chelsea to win to nil (11/10 – Paddy Power) looks on the cards with a small bet on Chelsea to win both halves at 15/8 (Paddy Power) too.

Chelsea v West Brom – Match Stats

  • 10 of the last 11 encounters between these two clubs has seen Chelsea lead at both half-time and full-time
  • The last 6 times Chelsea have hosted West Brom they have won to nil on every occasion
  • Chelsea were one of only 2 sides (Stoke the other) who failed to lose a single game last season after taking the lead
  • West Brom conceded more goals away from home (41) than any other last season
  • West Brom kept just 2 clean sheets in the 200/11 season (5% of games), by far the lowest in the division
