England Euro 2012 Squad Confirmed

Rio Ferdinand, Daniel Sturridge and Micah Richards are the biggest names missing from Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad after it was announced at Wembley this lunchtime.

The Manchester United defender’s omission was actually confirmed yesterday by manager Sir Alex Ferguson, once which almost certainly draws a line under his international career.

Despite Ferdinand’s vast tournament experience, Hodgson looks to have put faith in Phil Jones instead, given that he can cover a range of positions across the back and indeed in midfield if needs be.

Meanwhile after winning the Premier League title at the weekend, Man City defender has been brought back down to earth with a bang, now knowing that both he and the injured Kyle Walker will both miss out on a right-back spot, with Liverpool’s Glen Johnson being preferred in that position.

One player that does, somewhat surprisingly, make the squad is Liverpool striker Andy Carroll. Despite the player’s difficult first full season at Anfield, one in which he has scored just nine goals in all competitions, Hodgson has chosen him ahead of Peter Crouch who has 22 International goals, averaging more than a goal every other game at that level.

Equally bemusing is how Jordan Henderson has made the reserve list ahead of Manchester United’s Michael Carrick!

Hodgson’s available squad was somewhat limited by a number of high profile injuries, including Jack Wilshere, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone and Jack Rodwell. Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has also struggled to get fit in time for the Euros after recovering from an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard, the first senior England player Hodgson contacted after becoming manager, will lead England out against France on June 11th after being chosen as captain.
