Spain still Euro 2012 favourites despite Villa missing out

Favourites Spain have remained at 13/5 (Boylesports) in the betting to retain their European Championship crown despite news that David Villa will miss the tournament through injury.

The Barcelona striker, who has 51 goals in 82 games for Spain at International level, suffered a badly broken leg back in December and has fought a race against time to play in Euro 2012; a race in which he seems to have lost.

The 30-year-old made the announcement on Twitter earlier today,

“I’ve tried, but I can’t be 100% to play the EuroCup. I called Del Bosque. It’s the honest thing.”

The news will come as a blow to Spain’s chances given that Villa has a great record in major championships, netting 10 goals in 11 games during Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.
