Spain 7/4 to beat the Azzurri to Nil | Spain v Italy Preview

Spain are bidding to become the first side to retain the European Championship title when they begin their campaign against Italy on Sunday evening.

The pre-tournament favourites are 5/6 (Victor Chandler) whilst the Azzurri are as big as 4/1 to cause an upset with Paddy Power.

Vicente Del Bosque is missing two key players in Carlos Puyol and David Villa, but still has an array of talent to choose from, and it is anyone’s guess as to whether he will go with Torres, Llorente or Negredo up front.

Spain have played 21 games in European Championships to date, but have amanged just one clean sheet. This Italian side however lacks the attacking prowess that they were famous for in the 90’s and Spain look decent value at odds of 7/4 to win without conceding.

Italy did not concede a single second half goal in the qualifiers – the only side not to do so. They are 7/1 to win to nil here (Victor Chandler), but you would be brave men betting on Spain not to score and the Azzurri will surely be happy with a point.

Since the qualifiers ended however, the Italians have had a nightmare time of it. First came the match fixing scandel and then they lost their only warm-up game, 3-0 to Russia, meaning they have now lost their last three friendlies on the bounce.

Despite the fact that Spain have only beaten Italy once in major tournaments, with that win coming on penalties on their way to winning Euro 2008, we fancy them to break that duck this time around.
