Wiggins 5/4 to win his first Tour de France

The 99th Tour de France gets underway this weekend and Britain’s Bradley Wiggins heads the betting (5/4) to bag his first title with Paddy Power.

To win, Wiggins will have to battle his way through 20 grueling stages, concluding with a finish at the Champs-Elysees in Paris on the 22nd July, but comes into this event in great form, winning three of his last five races.

He crashed out of last years event, and the Team Sky rider will be looking to prove the doubters wrong this time around. And with Team Sky built around Wiggins, the 5/4 looks like a great price.

Defending champion Cadel Evans will be looking to follow up on last year success however and is 9/4 to make it back-to-back wins. Evans is the only rider who has come close to beating Wiggins in the recent time-trials, but he is miles away from the type of form he was coming into last years Tour de France.

Whilst the 2012 Tour de France looks to a be a two horse race, the mountain stages may offer a glimmer of hope to some of the other riders. Russian Denis Menchov has won both the Spanish and Italian equivalents in the past and he is 18/1 to win the Tour de France this time around. And whilst we don’t fancy him to win it he may represent some each way value at around 20/1 with Paddy Power (1/4, 1-2-3).

Ryder Hesjedal (40/1) is looking to become the first rider since Marco Pantani to win both the Giro D’Italia and Tour de France in the same year, a feat which he achieved in 1998, whilst Franck Schleck is available at odds of 33/1.
