US Open 2013 Preview

The 2nd major of the year gets underway at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania later this week and as usual we’re hoping to pick out some great value bets for the tournament – both for the outright and special markets.

Tiger Woods comes into the event as favourite but has never played a competitive round at Merion and so it is worth looking for a bigger-priced selection or two before placing your bets.

US Open Trends

When looking to pick the winner of any golf tournament, stats/trends are crucial and the US Open is no different.

American Webb Simpson is looking to defend his US Open crown but if he is to succeed he will become the first player since 1989 to do so; a big ask for the 27 year old.

Furthermore, only three winners in US Open history have been under 29 (Woods, McIlroy, Els) and we’re not convinced that the likes of Fowler, Manassero, Day and indeed Simpson, are up to this just yet.

At the other end of the age spectrum, it is worth noting that no player over 40 has won the US Open since Payne Stewart back in 1999; a negative for the likes of Westwood, Stricker, Furyk and of course Mickelson – a 5-time runner up.

It is worth keeping an eye on players in the top 50 or 60 in the world rankings however, as big-priced winners are few and far between in this particular event.

That said 7 of the last 8 US Open victors were first-time Major winners so do look out in-form players, but that are yet to taste Major victory (including Stenson, Snedeker, Rose & Clark).

The Course

Now to look at the course itself, as choosing the right ‘profile’ of a potential winner is important too…

Merion has hosted the US Open on four occasions (the last time in ’81), producing 3 American and an Australian winner.

The course features small greens and sloping fairways, so should favour the accurate players over the big-hitters. Players that meet that sort of profile include Rose, Stenson and Snedeker.

And although they can also hit it a long-way, we would also include McIlroy and Watson in this category. Both could well go close if they can hole a few putts.

The Shortlist

Now for the hard-part – choosing our selections…

Picking the winner of any golf event is tough, but we have narrowed the field down to what we feel are six players which represent real value: McIlroy, Watson, Rose, Snedeker, Stenson and Tim Clark.
