Wimbledon 2011 – Betting Preview

The 125th All England Championships gets underway later today and as always this provides some great betting opportunities as the country goes tennis crazy for a fortnight!

The bookies can’t split the top two in the betting of the Men’s Wimbledon Singles; understandable given that no-one else has won the Wimbledon Championships since 2002.

Reigning champion Rafael Nadal comes into the tournament holding three of the four Grand Slams and is 9/4 (bet365 & Skybet) to win the Wimbledon Men’s Singles title again. He has reached the final in each of his last five appearances at Wimbledon (8/11 to reach final – bet365), winning twice.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer will be looking for his 7th Wimbledon title (equaling the current record held by Pete Sampras and William Renshaw) – further enhancing his reputation as on of the best grass-court players of all time. The Swiss is 9/4 (William Hill) to do just that.

Of the others, Novak Djokovic (4/1 with William Hill) is the most likely to challenge the ‘big 2′. The big Serb is most certainly in fine-form this year and will be looking to build on his Australian Open victory. Djokovic certainly has the best draw, with Nikolay Davydenko and Lleyton Hewitt the only players likely to cause him any problems at all – neither of which will cause any sleepless nights.

For the patriotic Brits amongst you, Andy Murray can be backed at 7/1 (William Hill). There has been no British Men’s Wimbledon champion since 1936 and Murray will do well to win here, especially as he will probably have to beat both Nadal and Federer on the way to lifting the title at SW19. With that in mind the 7/1 appears very short in my opinion.

Selections:
Novak Djokovic to win Outright (4/1 with William Hill)
Nadal/Djokovic Final (3/1  with Paddy Power)
